August 18th

Very early wake up, 5 am, as we have decided to get on the way as the sun rises so as to see as many aminals as possible. We also have a long drive to Xakanaxa Boat Station for a boat ride on the Delta.

We drive to North Gate on the same road than the day before and it is now easy as we know the way. At the gate the guard tells us that there is one difficult passage on the way to Xakanaxa and that, once we get where the road crosses the water, we should take the path on the right. As we drive along, a supply 4x4 overtakes us and I ask the driver if he is on his way to Xakanaxa. The answer is positive and he tells me that the crossing is not too far and that I should follow him. At the water crossing he hardly stops and take the left path. I stop to see how he manages. Once the other side, seeing that I am out of the car looking at both path wondering which one I should take, the driver shouts out “on the left, 1st gear low range full speed”. Yeah! It is not his car and he does not really care! So it will be 1st gear low range, but slowly across. It is not as spectacular a drive across but certainly much more car friendly. Once the other side he tells me that there are no more difficult water crossing and off he goes at full speed.

We get to the boat station more than 3 hours after having left our campsite and a little over 60 km away. There we meet Luke and he will be taking us for the next 4 hours on a boat ride on the Delta. Again, we enjoy great sights and bird watching.

On the way back to Moghoto we drive by Xakanaxa airstrip and there we see a couple of plane landing. It reminds me of good old days when I used to fly those type of plane in Zambia all those years ago.

Just before the camp, I let the kids drive a little, and they really enjoy it.

We go to bed reasonably early that evening as it has been a long day. We are little frustrated as the people camping not far from us managed to see some lions that day, animals we have not manage to see yet.
