August 20th

Breakfast is served just after 7 am as we are meeting our pilot for an 8 o’clock take off.

Once at the airport and after having been introduced to our pilot, Esther comes to me and whispers “he looks so young”. I remind her that it was “me” over 20 years ago, and that she should not be worried even after yesterday’s event.

Charles sits at the front next to the pilot, Esther and Victoria on the middle row, and me right at the back. I do not want to interfere with this guy flying. He does a good job at showing us the Delta from the air and we land safely an hour later.

Time to drive to Serowe, on our way we cross the Boteti River in Motopi and it is a flowing river another sign of the amount of water there is around this year. We drive by Orapa and Lethakane diamond mines south of the Makgadikgadi Pans and get to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary before dark. There we book a night game drive with a local guide. We get to see a few Rhinos, quite impressive.

Once back from the drive we were frozen we spent 3 hours in an open 4x4 and it was particularly chilly that night. We put up the tents in less than 10 minutes and 5 minutes later we were in our beds hoping for a good warm sleep.
