August 12th

After breakfast and folding the tents once more -- we have become quite good at it -- off to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

The border is another interesting experience. Leaving Botswana is a non event, but the Zim border is another story. Everyone is nice but I find myself years back, almost to the time I was in Zaïre (RDC); poorly maintained infrastructures, the forms we have to fill in are on poor quality paper and poorly printed. We have to use bits of carbon paper that have been used a “million” times. After immigration and customs, I have to purchase a temporary car insurance. The person dealing with that is not in the border post office building but sits outside in the wind and possibly the rain with all his forms and receipt books held in place by stones set on them. It is windy today and the man has a hard time filling the form with our car details. I ask him “do you not have an office” (meaning in the border post building), and he replies “yes we have one in town”. Now how is that going to help him deal with the conditions here at the border? The man did answer the question I asked, but not the meaning.

We get to Victoria Falls and check-in at the “Victoria Falls Rest Camp and Lodges”, organise the next day activities, white water rafting and a cruise on the Zambezi.

It is now time to see what this place is all about. The Victoria Falls. It is pointless for me to say anything .......

Another must (I think) is the Victoria Falls Hotel, and so we decide to go and have dinner on the terrace. The place is magnificently kept, and the service is great. Dinner is served and Victoria has gone for something exotic, a “Cesar Salad with Crocodile”.

Back to our Chalet for the night.
