August 17th

We get up early as we plan a game drive into the Moremi Game Reserve.

During breakfast we are suddenly faced with a large baboon stealing our cereals on our table. He was facing me just across the table. I am trying to scare it away by shouting, but he looks at me straight in the eyes while grabbing our food. After having taken it away he sits 20 meters away from us and eats it away.

We eventually leave the campsite and on our way to North Gate (by Khwai village) the road is not as straight forward as indicated in the different guide books mainly due to the fact that there has been so much rain this year that the Okavango Delta is “overflowing”. This means that the road that normaly follows the edge of the Delta is now under water.

The "new" roads have moved with the level of the water and now there are so many are dead ends. We were lucky to find a local driver, who was on his way to the Khwai airstrip to pick up some tourists, to show us the way around the area. He had to let us go on our own after explaining to us the road to take to get to North Gate.

We manage to get to the first obstacle (out of 4) without too much of a problem; but once there, the way forward does not look as simple as the driver led us to believe. Indeed the water looks much deeper than expected. Charles kindly offers to walk across and see how deep the water actually is.

It is about waist deep, Charles' waist, but we drive across with no problem.

We arrive at North Gate via the bridge over the river.

Once in the park we get to Dombo Hippo Pools were we stop and take the time to watch birds and hippos and particularly one grazing not too far away from us. We take the opportunity to have lunch on that spot as it is nice and peaceful and Esther is really getting into bird watching.

After lunch we drive back to our campsite, it takes us almost 2 hours, for another lovely evening.
