During the night we heard hyenas barking, but felt comfortable in our tents on top of the car.
Today we will cross Savuti Game Reserve. It is a reasonably long drive and according to the guide book the road is not so good; and, sure enough, a few kilometres past the entrance gate we get stuck in a very sandy patch of road. After having tried the low range gear, the dif-locks, I have to tell Esther and the kids that we will have to dig ourselves out. We get out of the car to start organising, when I decide to try one more time with them out of the car. Sure enough, I manage to drive away...
We arrive at Savuti after having seen little game and there the Savuti river is a flowing river and not just a dry river bed.
After the river there is choice of two roads, the marsh or the sand ridge road. At the entrance of the park the game guard has recommended that we take the sand ridge road as it was still quite wet on the marsh road.
We get to the southern gate, Mababe Gate, without too much difficulty and there we have a picnic break before carrying on to our night stop at Moghoto campsite, south east of Moremi North Gate. While we are eating I ask the driver of a car that has come from were we are going how the road is, and he tells me that he got stuck 2 hours in the sand. I think to myself we are going to have fun!!!
After lunch off we go, ready mentally for a difficult road ahead. We drive and we are a little surprise as the road is not as sandy as I thought and we are starting to wonder were did those other people got stuck. After a while we work out that they probably tried to take a short cut and got stuck on a smaller road.
We start to get closer to our campsite when suddenly the road crosses a large patch of water. I am a little concerned as I did not expect it and I do not see where the road goes on the other side as it is quite wide. We sit there trying to work out what would be the best way in and out of this large water patch. Luckily a car comes from the other side and drives straight across. This is great as it showed us the way to go.
A few kilometres after we get to the Moghoto Campsite, and there we set up camp just before sunset and its typical lights.
